“In most circumstances, society likes to believe that the perpetrator is not known to the victim and just some guy they met that night. In most cases the perpetrator is known to the victim. In fact, “72% of victims are sexually assaulted by someone they know.” (Reporting Sexual Assault, n.d). This is a very scary fact considering out of the 72% these people could have been intimate partner's, friend, acquaintance, or even a relative.
This piece of research drove my entire capstone project. Society has a huge stereotype that rape or sexual assault usually happen by a stranger, when in fact most cases happen by someone that the victim knows. The main thing that drove this project was that this can happen to anybody. I was trying to break the stereotypes that sexual assaults often entail and this piece helped me with it. I made sure that the kids know how scary this is and to make sure they establish boundaries. I really tried to convey to them kids that it is not just the stereotypical man in the white van who "looks like a rapist". The one thing that many people didn't know about it was that it was most commonly someone that the victim knows. This research really impacted the kids because it really hit home for these kids. A lot of them had these preconceived notions and it really got to them. It was amazing to see the break in the way kids think and i was proud that I was able to do that for them.
