Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone project is based around Sexual Assault Awareness and sharing that it is very real. On Friday September 22nd my volleyball team is playing Suffield and I am going to dedicate that game to Sexual Assault Awareness. We will be decorating the gym in teal(the color for sexual assault awareness), having a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle and I will be selling bracelets. All proceeds go to the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence. I also made a team for the suicide prevention walk on Saturday September 23, 2017. This includes raising money for suicide prevention. Later in the year I also will be sitting in on Mrs. Portal’s health classes while my mentor from CCMC come in and gives lessons abouut sexual assault and healthy relationships. At the end of her program I will get up and share my story.
My research question is: In what way is american culture to blame for the response to sexual assault? I chose this as my research question because I believe I can take this very far and take it in many different directions. I think american society often blames the victim so I want to investigate. Some of the artifacts that I will be collecting are pictures of the volleyball team wearing the teal shirt and the media release form all the girls had to sign so I can put pictures of them on my website.
My mentor is Amneris Torres. She is a certified school counselor and works for CCMC. She also works for Safe Kids Connecticut through CCMC. She is the one who is going to be going into classrooms to educate people. My supervisor is my volleyball coach, Steve Goodrich. He is the one that is helping me out with the teal game and will be over seeing it. Throughout this project, I believe that it will help me cope with what happened to me and I will become more comfortable with sharing the experience that happened to me. I think my learning stretch for this project will help me a lot with learning more about sexual assault because I am no means an expert on it. I also want to help spread awareness and let people know how real it is. I also believe that as I tell my story it will help with coping and become easier to talk about it.
Sincerely,
Rianne Mayer
